A consortium of 10 Pittsburgh area colleges and universities today announced a cooperation agreement with 13 schools in Ireland.
The agreement with the Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education and the Institutes of Technology Ireland calls for cooperation in education, training, research and innovation. That includes opportunities for students and graduates of each group to study in institutions of the other as well as professional development of faculty and administrative staff and exchanges of faculty, students and administrators. Student exchanges may begin in 2013.
The 13 members of Ireland's Institutes of Technology are located throughout the country and offer programs ranging from two-year through Ph.D.
In a news release, Kenneth Service, executive director of PCHE, said the Irish schools are known for supporting business development and commercializing research developments.
"It is also another example of how Pittsburgh's colleges and universities are contributing to Pittsburgh's growing reputation for excellence around the world," he said.
"This emphasis reflects a similar effort on the part of PCHE member institutions to contribute to economic development in the community," he said.
Gerry Murray, CEO of IOTI, said: "This agreement is unique because it is 'system to system,' rather than just an agreement between individual institutions"
