Energy and effort were not lacking for Duquesne tonight against Xavier at Consol Energy Center as they battled the Musketeers and pushed them to the limit.
But once again, despite playing extremely hard and at times extremely well, the Dukes just didn't quite have enough in the tank to get all the way over the top and as a result lost for the 11th game in a row -- 73-65.
Duquesne trailed, 33-26, at the half but came out of the locker room like a team on a mission and when Quevyn Winters made a lay-up with 12:54 to play it completed a 21-4 run that gave the Dukes a 47-37 run.
But at that point , the Musketeers responded by looking to the paint and made a 21-4 run over their own and capped it with a short jumper by Semaj Christon with 5:40 to play that put them ahead 58-51.
The Dukes were then never able to get back into the game as the Musketeers hit 13 of 16 free throw attempts down the stretch to keep them at arm's length.
Duquesne (7-16, 0-9), which started three freshmen for the first time this season, was led by Quevyn Winters, who had 19 points and senior Andre Marhold had one of his best games of the season as he went for 9 points and 10 rebounds.
Christon and Isaiah Philmore led Xavier (13-9, 6-3) with 16 points each while Travis Taylor had 13 points and 12 rebounds.
