Alice Waters visits Pittsburgh Sunday
At 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Union Station/The Pennsylvanian, food icon Alice Waters will visit Pittsburgh as part of Station to Station, a three-week, cross-country train trip that features musicians, artists and creative types at nine stops.
Pittsburgh is the only away-from-home location Ms. Waters will visit. She'll talk with event curator Doug Aitken about school cafeterias and how kids learn about the food they eat, part of her "Edible Schoolyard" endeavor.
Tickets cost $25 and are still available for the event, which will include appearances by musicians Thurston Moore (formerly of Sonic Youth) and John Moloney of Chelsea Light Moving, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti and No Age, as well as visual artists such as Mr. Aitken and Ed Ruscha.
Urban Supper from EatPGH on Sept. 14
Tickets are on sale for the first Urban Supper, a 100-seat event on Sept. 14 hosted by EatPGH. Chefs Rick DeShantz of Meat & Potatoes, Downtown and, Keith Fuller of Root 174 in Regent Square have a seven-course tasting menu planned, which includes fried chicken, smoked shrimp, pork terrine and barbecued duck.
Tickets for the event are $125 and include the cocktail hour from 6 to 7 p.m. and dinner until 10 p.m. They can be purchased through urbansupper.brownpapertickets.com.
Blue Line Grille and Uptown to open in October
Blue Line Grille will open at 1014 Fifth Ave. adjacent to Consol Energy Center, Uptown, in late October, with Uptown, a bar and lounge with a rooftop, scheduled to open several weeks later.
Partners Kevin Nord and James Mendelson, formerly of Doc's Place Bar and Restaurant in Shadyside, have chosen Austrian-born Christian Mayrhofer as chef. Mr. Mayrhofer ran the kitchen at McCormick & Schmick's and has worked in Europe, Asia and South America before settling in the region in 1997.
Construction is underway on the four-story building that will house a 6,000- square-foot bar, a 6,000-square-foot restaurant and 10 lofts.
Penn Avenue Fish Co. to land a liquor license
If all goes well, Penn Avenue Fish Co. will secure a liquor license for its Strip District location within two months. City Council first has to approve a license transfer, which is scheduled for next week. Should that go through, it would be approximately 60 days until the restaurant could sell liquor.
At first, the restaurant plans to serve craft beer, wine and sake that pairs well with fish, confirmed co-owners Angela Earley and Henry Dewey.
Eventually they'll sell beer and wine Downtown and will expand to spirits after they build out this spring the second floor of the sibling location, where they plan to construct an oyster bar. Although the restaurant will offer beer and wine this season, plan on a year before the build-out will be complete.
Churchview Farm adds September dinners
Kate Romane of E2 and Tara Rockacy of Churchview Farm in Baldwin Borough have added two September dates to the series of summer farm dinners.
Kevin Costa of Crested Duck Charcuterie in Beechview will cook Sept. 14 and Steven Felder of Stagioni will cook Sept. 15 for dinners that commence at 5:30 p.m. and cost $85, including tax, gratuity, wine pairing and food. Tickets can be purchased at churchviewfarmpgh.com.
Proper Brick Oven & Tap Room open for lunch
Proper Brick Oven & Tap Room from Suzanne Hrach and Jason Lockney, which took over the former Tambellini space Downtown, opened for lunch last Sunday, having debuted for dinner service at the end of August.
The menu at the 99-seat eatery showcases pizza with seasonal toppings made in a wood-burning oven. The kitchen is run by executive chef Lynette "Elbee" Bushey, former chef at Verde Kitchen & Cantina in Garfield. The bar manager is Drue Ann Trombetta, formerly of Siba Cucina in Seven Fields, who curates a beverage program with Mr. Lockney that includes 30 draft beers -- with an emphasis on local breweries -- and 25 wines by the glass.
