The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania is accepting applications for its fifth annual $5,000 scholarship awarded to aspiring journalists. The scholarship will be awarded in May 2011 at the annual Golden Quills Awards Dinner sponsored by The Press Club. Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college or university for at least two years, demonstrate why they should receive the award and their primary residence must be in one of the 29 counties of Western Pennsylvania. Deadline for applications is January 14, 2011. Landau Building Co. was awarded a contract to build a New Pharmacy at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, the nationally and internationally recognized flagship treatment and research facility of the UPMC Cancer Centers network.
Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield awarded Manchester Bidwell Corporation with a $36,000 grant to support Bidwell Training Center's new Electronic Record Medical Assistant program's training and software packages for three years. The 10-month diploma major was designed to meet the rapidly growing need for employees who can skillfully use electronic health records, a complete system that documents health care services and utilizes the information gathered to make decisions about health care.
David Koenig of Beaconsfield Financial Services was awarded the 2010 FIVE STAR Wealth Manager award. Mr. Koenig is a chartered retirement planning counselor and vice president offering financial services.
Fairmont Pittsburgh received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification at the gold level from the United States Green Building Council. The announcement was made by Leonard S. Czarnecki, general manager of the luxury hotel. The LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. In order to receive Gold certification, Fairmont Pittsburgh had to meet strict sustainable design and construction guidelines set by the USGBC.
The Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association received the C. Henry Hottum Award. The award is presented annually to HFMA regional chapters across the country that show performance improvement in educational programming.
Alison Colbert, an assistant professor at the School of Nursing at Duquesne University, won a competitive grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to develop interventions to improve the health of incarcerated women as they re-enter society.
