AWARDS VOTING

Voting for the 2008 Sportsman & Sportswoman of the Year and Danny Awards has concluded.

At the close of 2008, the Post-Gazette sports writers made their nominations for the Dapper Dan Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year. Nominations were based on the area male and female sports figures who made the most outstanding accomplishment in sports in 2008. With nominations narrowed to between three and six candidates in each category, the public is now asked to vote by a newspaper ballot or online. Dapper Dan Charities’ executive committee will select the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year from the top vote-getters. Winners will be announced Sunday, February 8, 2008 in the Post-Gazette.

Back again for 2009 will be “Danny” awards, except this time for the best moment, play and breakthrough athlete of 2008. "Danny" award winners won't be revealed until the night of the 2009 banquet on April 2.

At the 2008 banquet, in honor of the city’s 250th birthday, voters were asked to pick the best moment, the best team and the best player in Pittsburgh sports history. Winners were Maz’ home run to win the 1960 World Series as Best Moment, the 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers who beat Dallas in Super Bowl XIII for Best Team and Penguins Hall of Fame center Mario Lemieux for Best Athlete. Similar to the ESPYs, fan voting online will exclusively determine the winners.
