New Miss America Nina Davuluri will start the first day of her reign the same way most of her predecessors did ??? with a frolic in the Atlantic City surf.

At a press conference Monday at Boardwalk Hall, where she became the first contestant of Indian heritage to win the crown Sunday night, the 24-year-old Syracuse N.Y., native said she wants to become a doctor. Also Monday, the new Miss America found herself the subject of racist tweeters, according to USA Today reports. Twitter was flush with attacks on the fact that she is the first woman of Indian descent to win the pageant and wear the crown. collected many of them and some have already been deleted, USA Today said, but Davuluri brushed off any negativity in her first news conference after winning the crown. "I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American," she told AP.

"I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America."

Davuluri also said she was proud of her talent portion of the show. "It's the first time Bollywood has ever been performed on the Miss America stage and it's such an honor for myself, my family and the Indian community, as well."
