Van Cliburn, 78, has been diagnosed with advanced bone cancer and is resting comfortably at his Texas home. The renowned classical pianist is under excellent care and his spirits are high, his publicist told The Associated Press.
Cliburn was 23 when he skyrocketed to fame in 1958 by winning the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He returned to a New York ticker-tape parade, and a Time magazine cover proclaimed him "The Texan Who Conquered Russia."
Until recently, Cliburn practiced daily and performed limited engagements. He has performed for every president since Harry Truman and for years has devoted his time to the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Founded in 1962, it's held every four years and considered among the world's premier piano competitions.
Cliburn won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003.
Singer LeAnn Rimes has voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation facility for 30 days to deal with anxiety and stress.
"While there will be speculation regarding her treatment, she is simply there to learn and develop coping mechanisms," her spokesman told People magazine. "While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."
Rimes checked into an undisclosed site on Wednesday, her 30th birthday, after celebrating at a Malibu sushi restaurant with her husband, actor Eddie Cibrian.
"This is just time for me to emotionally check out for a second and take care of myself and be back in 30 days as the best 30-year-old woman I can be," Rimes told People.
Giuliana and Bill Rancic welcomed son Edward Duke Rancic Wednesday night in Denver. Born via gestational surrogate, Edward arrived at 7 pounds, 4 ounces.
The couple -- she's on "E! News," he's the first winner of "The Apprentice," and they have a reality show on the Style Network -- were in the delivery room. Bill later tweeted: "The 'Duke' has landed! ... G & I feel blessed beyond words ... We did it!"
Giuliana discovered she had breast cancer during fertility treatments, had a double mastectomy and has become a spokeswoman about the importance of early detection.
The new parents will celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary Saturday.
Eddie Van Halen underwent emergency surgery for "a severe bout of diverticulitis," according to his band's website. "No further surgeries are needed, and a full recovery is expected within 4-6 months," the site said.
Van Halen the band has been forced to reschedule a tour of Japan that was supposed to begin in November, Entertainment Weekly said.
Thirty summer tour dates were canceled back in June, when band members -- reunited for the tour with singer David Lee Roth -- said they had overextended themselves and everybody was getting along and in good health.
Eddie, 57, has suffered physical setbacks before, including hip-replacement surgery and an operation to remove a third of his tongue due to cancer.
Michael Keaton has a role in the "RoboCop" remake as CEO of the corporation that builds the cyborg policeman. The role was expected to go to Hugh Laurie, but he dropped out of the project, according to Deadline.com.
The re-imagining of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven film is scheduled to begin shooting next month and is due in theaters next summer.
Keaton joins previously announced Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Abbie Cornish; Jose Padilha directs.
"Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film, and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place," Padilha told Deadline.
Is Russell Brand trying to add a little spice to his life?
British tabloid The Sun has reported that Brand and Geri Halliwell -- aka Ginger Spice -- are an item, and on Wednesday night, the two were photographed together outside her London home.
The two have reportedly bonded over their love of yoga, and a source told The Sun, "Geri has said they have a spiritual connection through yoga and they practice asana together."
Brand, 37, was divorced from Katy Perry in July after nearly two years of marriage. He and Halliwell, 40, each performed at the closing ceremony of the Olympics on Aug. 12 and have reportedly been spotted out on dates together since then, including a visit to Hampton Court Palace with Halliwell's daughter, Bluebell, 6.
