Education Management Corp., the struggling Pittsburgh-based for-profit education company that operates the Art Institutes, has recruited a couple of high profile nominees to serve on its board of directors.

Former H.J. Heinz Co. chairman, president and CEO William R. Johnson, who led the Pittsburgh ketchup maker until it was sold earlier this year, and retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Lester L. Lyles will go up for election by EDMC shareholders at the company's annual meeting in November.

If approved by shareholders for the board position, Mr. Johnson will be nominated to serve as nonexecutive chairman, succeeding Todd S. Nelson, who took the chairman's position in August 2012. Mr. Nelson had been the company's CEO from February 2007 until last summer.

EDMC has struggled with declining enrollments and revenues, as a result of ongoing inquiries raised about recruitment tactics used by for-profit colleges and tightened federal student loan rules.
