House urged to pass bill that helps fix locks, dams
U.S. Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr., D-Pa., is calling on the House of Representatives to pass legislation that would boost federal funding to repair and replace the nation's aging locks and dams. In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner on Friday, Mr. Casey urged the adoption of a bill similar to one approved by the Senate in May. Among other things, the measure would accelerate funding for needed improvements on the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh. Mr. Casey also called for support of his proposal to increase a diesel fuel tax barge operators pay to finance locks and dams projects from 20 cents per gallon to 29 cents.
Highmark may announce CMU in new partnership
Highmark Inc. plans to announce a "major academic partnership to leverage innovation" in the company's new Allegheny Health Network on Monday. According to a Highmark official, the insurer's partner is to be Carnegie Mellon University.
Starbucks hiking prices on average by 1 percent
Caffeine may not be the only jolt Starbucks' customer get next week. The Seattle-based coffee company is hiking prices on average by 1 percent nationally starting Tuesday. The increases will vary by region and apply to different drinks.
Ruling in patent suit goes Apple's way
Apple Inc. has won a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. in a Japanese court, one of dozens of legal battles around the world between the technology giants. Damages were not announced. Samsung said it will study the ruling before deciding whether to appeal.
Jay-Z's 1M album downloads won't be on Billboard chart
Jay-Z's got 99 problems, and the Billboard chart is one. Billboard said Friday it will not include the 1 million album downloads Jay-Z is giving to Galaxy mobile phone users through a deal with Samsung. Jay-Z's new album, "Magna Carta Holy Grail," will be released July 7, but it will go out to 1 million Samsung users July 4.
