PNC Bank will close 10 more branches in the region within the next 90 days as part of an effort to cut costs and focus on serving customers who increasingly are banking online and via smartphones.
The closures, which include the last remaining bank branch in the city of Clairton, come on top of four other branches shuttered earlier in the year.
Spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel declined to say how many more branches in the region might be closed this year, saying decisions beyond 90 days may not be final.
Pittsburgh's biggest bank has said it planned to close about 200 branches this year across its footprint in 19 states and Washington, D.C., which is about 7 percent of its network of roughly 2,900 offices. The bank closed 65 branches last year.
PNC CEO William Demchak has said that although branches will remain an important touchstone for attracting new customers, the bank is looking to cut costs by deploying smaller branches and advanced function ATMs. The new automated teller machines stamp check images on receipts and dispense dollar bills to make it easier for customers to deposit and cash checks.
The 10 area branches slated to close include two Downtown, at 20 Stanwix St. and 6 PPG Place.
The others include locations at 4612 Forbes Ave., Oakland; 101 Brilliant Ave., Aspinwall; 571 Miller Ave., Clairton; 3337 Millers Run Road, Cecil; 433 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon; 1206 National Pike, Hopwood; 8933 Route 30, Huntingdon; and 1 N. Main St., Masontown.
Four others were closed earlier in the year at 291 Beverly Road, Mt. Lebanon; 236 Fifth St., Freeport; 601 McKean Ave., Donora; and 1366 Mall Run Road, Uniontown.
The closure of the Clairton branch, which is set for August, has triggered an outcry from community leaders who say the loss will make it hard for senior citizens and others without a car to do their banking.
Ms. Zwiebel declined to comment on the situation in Clairton.
Clairton accounts will be transferred to PNC's Elizabeth branch 2.5 miles away.
Ms. Zwiebel said that after the closure, PNC will have four branches within a five-square-mile radius of Clairton. There also will be a walk-up ATM down the street from the old PNC branch at the Livingston Pharmacy and a drive-up ATM at the Clairton municipal building.
