Two Pittsburgh-based law firms are among the top 20 largest in the U.S. based on gross revenues in 2012.
K&L Gates was 18th and Reed Smith was 19th on American Lawyer's annual ranking of firms by revenues.
K&L, with gross revenues of $1.06 billion last year, fell from 17th place in the 2012 ranking because its revenues slipped by less than 1 percent from the prior year.
At 19th, Reed Smith didn't move in the rankings, although its revenues grew by 2 percent to $1.01 billion.
Topping the list was DLA Piper, a global law firm with bases in Baltimore and Chicago, with revenues of $2.4 billion and 4,000-plus lawyers.
Some firms in the top 100 have Pittsburgh offices including Jones Day, ranked sixth; Morgan, Lewis & Bockius (12th); McGuireWoods (51st); Duane Morris (70th); Pepper Hamilton (81st); and Jackson Lewis (82nd).
Both K&L and Reed Smith have continued aggressive expansion strategies since last year. K&L this year has opened offices in Seoul, South Korea; Houston; Wilmington, Del.; and four offices in Australia as a result of its merger with large Australian firm Middletons. It has 2,000-plus lawyers worldwide in 48 offices.
Reed Smith has 1,800-plus lawyers in 25 domestic and international offices, including its global customer center Downtown. It opened an office in Houston in February.
