The 63 employees who work in the Houston-based EOG Resources' Canonsburg office are the only people in the Pittsburgh region who work for one of America's 10 Top Workplaces, according to WorkplaceDynamics, a Philadelphia-based employee survey firm.

WorkplaceDynamics partners with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and 29 other regional newspapers to create Top Workplaces lists based on surveys of employees.

Locally, EOG Resources was ranked eighth of all small employers based on its regional employment. Nationally, however, the company has more than 1,000 employees, the threshold for the national survey.

Workplace Dynamics created its Top Workplaces list based on surveys of employees of 872 companies in 30 regions of the country. Overall, EOG ranked as the sixth best large company for which to work.

FedEx, which did have its Pittsburgh employees participate in the survey program, and Whole Foods, whose local employees did not, were both listed in a second tier of top national employers. FedEx was first among the top large employers in this region in the local rankings.

Nationally the best place to work, according to WorkplaceDynamics, was Detroit-based Quicken Loans.

The rest of the top 10 were, in order, The Container Store of Coppell, Texas; Anadarko Petroleum Corp. of Woodlands, Texas; Park Place Dealerships of Fort Worth, Texas; EOG Recources; Pioneer Natural Resources of Irving, Texas; Mattress Firm of Houston, Texas; Chicago-based Coyote Logistics; Austin, Texas-based Keller Williams Realty; and NuStar Energy of San Antonio, Texas.

Based on seven years of surveying companies, WorkplaceDynamics CEO Doug Claffey said the best workplaces tend to be clustered in five industries, from best to worst: real estate, construction, hospitality, logistics and financial services. The lowest scoring industries are, from worst to best, government, utilities and telecommunications, education, manufacturing and information technology.

In the Pittsburgh region, North Allegheny School District bucked those trends as one of the region's top large employers. The district was listed among national companies as one of the Top 150 places to work in the country.

Another large local company, Mine Safety Appliances, has enough employees to make the list of top workplaces in the country, but was excluded because too few of its employees completed the survey.
