Giant Eagle Pharmacy has stopped using needle-free technology for flu vaccines but will continue giving traditional flu injections.

The so-called jet-injector vaccines were pulled from the stores Friday afternoon after the Food and Drug Administration posted an advisory earlier that day that the system of delivery is not yet cleared for flu vaccine use.

There is only one vaccine approved for jet injector use, that for measles, mumps and rubella, FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess said today.

Thomas W. Skinner, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said that "based on current, though limited, information ... CDC and FDA believe that it is not necessary for people who got their flu vaccine via jet injector to be re-vaccinated."
