Supercomputing center official lands board post

Ralph Roskies, scientific co-director of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, has been appointed to the National Library of Medicine's board of regents. The appointment, for a four-year term, was made by Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services. Mr. Roskies, a physics professors at the University of Pittsburgh, has been scientific co-director of the supercomputing center since it was established in 1986.

United-American Savings posts rise in net income

United-American Savings Bank, a one-branch bank on the South Side, said net income for the three months ended June 30 rose to $109,000, or 38 cents per share, from $86,000 in the same period last year. No per-share figures are available for the year-ago period because it was prior to the bank going public last August.

N.Y. doctor to lead WPAHS obstetrics, gynecology

Allan Klapper, currently chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at New York Downtown Hospital, has been named system chair for the West Penn Allegheny Health System's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Klapper received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Acsusis to buy SPi, based in the Philippines

The Downtown medical transcription firm Acusis LLC has announced that it would purchase the medical transcription assets of SPi America LLC/SPi Technologies Inc., a global business process outsourcing company with headquarters in the Philippines, for an undisclosed amount. The transaction is expected to close by the end of this month. SPi has about 500 employees.

Fitch Ratings has affirmed its BB rating for Weirton Medical Center's $7 million in hospital revenue bonds and upgraded the hospital's outlook from negative to stable, citing the hospital's improved operating performance. ... Sony's next-generation PlayStation Vita won't be available in the United States in time for Christmas.
