Mason to speak here Monday

Andrew Mason returns to Pittsburgh Monday to deliver the opening address of Global Entrepreneurship Week at Carnegie Mellon University. He will speak in the Tepper Building auditorium at 12:30 p.m.; the event is free and open to the public.

Wacky spinoffs:

Groupon has spun off some wacky side projects that also dabble in sociology.

Two recent ones are "Groupawn," in which a 28-year-old man is attempting to live solely off Groupons for a year, with a big-bucks payoff, and "Grouspawn," a sort of online dating service where those who have met and dated using Groupons can enter a contest to win a $100,000 college scholarship for their child, should they end up having one.

"Ugh! Grouspawn!" said Bridgit Wolf, the mother of Groupon CEO Andrew Mason. "But that's Andrew ... ."

True to form, Mr. Mason helped launch Grouspawn with an often-facetious, 71/2-minute interview with, in which he was introduced by host Alexia Tsotsis as the "notorious media prankster."

His mother knew he was having fun.

"The slicked-back hair," she said, laughing. "And the fake tan."

But Mr. Mason also talked about his company's startling worldwide growth and its placing a premium on corporate transparency.
