The landmark clock over the old Duquesne Brewery at 21st and Mary streets, South Side, has a new sponsor. AT&T has bought the rights to advertise on the clock's face.
Chris Bauer, an AT&T spokesman, said the clock is being redesigned in time for a community lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. on Nov. 5.
AT&T made its decision this summer to be next in a long line of corporate sponsors, Mr. Bauer said. "We thought it would be a great opportunity to be part of the South Side community."
The clock face will be orange, with AT&T's blue logo, he said, declining to discuss the amount AT&T is paying to sponsor the clock, repair and redesign it.
With a 28-foot minute hand that weighs a ton, the clock has afforded highly visible advertising space to numerous corporations over the years. It can be seen more than a mile away.
After Duke Beer, Stroh's was next to put its logo on the face. After that it was WTAE-TV.
Pittsburgh Brewing Co. took over in 1999, paying $44,000 to repair the clock and more than $5,000 a month to advertise its logo on the face. The clock has been dark for several months since the previous sponsor, Equitable Gas, decided not to continue leasing the space in March.
Scott Waitlevertch, spokesman for Equitable Gas, said the seven-year run was "a worthwhile effort. It was great to have a presence on the city skyline. But we decided to pursue other avenues of branding and a new logo."
Helene Milan, a limited partner in Jedo Enterprises, which owns the building the clock is on, said the clock was erected in 1932 on Mount Washington and moved to the brewery in 1961.
