Duquesne Light Co. seeks rate increase for 2011
Duquesne Light Co. has filed a request with the state Public Utility Commission for a rate increase to take effect in January 2011. The increase, to 7.86 cents per kilowatt hour from 7.156 cents/kwh, would raise the monthly bill for a customer using 600 kwh a month to $87.81, from $83.58. The rate would remain in place through May 2013. The PUC is expected to issue its ruling by mid-2010.
Work on retail complex in Bridgeville starts
Construction has started on a $2 million retail complex in Bridgeville near the entrance of the Bursca Business Park on Route 50. The 14,000-square-foot Bursca Frontgate I will feature a Chinese restaurant and a beer distributor. Still available to lease are 3,000 square feet. The grand opening is set for May 2010. A second phase featuring construction of a 6,000-square-foot building is scheduled to begin at the same time as the grand opening. Burns & Scalo Real Estate Services Inc. is doing the project.
Royal Philips surprises with 3rd-quarter profit
Royal Philips Electronics NV, Europe's biggest consumer-electronics maker, unexpectedly posted a profit in the third quarter as operating earnings at the consumer unit more than doubled. Third-quarter net income jumped to 174 million euros ($256 million), or 19 cents a share, from 57 million euros, or 6 cents, in the year-earlier period, the Amsterdam-based company said yesterday. Analysts had predicted a loss of 44.7 million euros, the average of 13 estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Philips, the parent of Respironics, which has headquarters in Murrysville, didn't break out Respironics' performance.
3 hospitals ranked in top 10% for cardiac services
Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Allegheny General Hospital and UPMC Passavant have been ranked in the top 10 percent nationally for cardiac care and cardiac surgery by HealthGrades, a leading independent health-care rating company. Jefferson has the highest ranking among local hospitals for treatment of strokes, while St. Clair, UPMC St. Margaret and AGH also ranked in the top 10 percent nationally for stroke care. The study of nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide looked at mortality and complication rates from 2006 through 2008.

The phones are made by a Microsoft Corp. subsidiary and sold by T-Mobile. … W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery said 12 workers are returning to work. The Bradford, McKean County, firm had laid off 154, starting in January.
