Black Box shareholders re-elect board members

Black Box Network Services shareholders approved everything the board of the Lawrence-based communications and infrastructure services company recommended yesterday, including the re-election of six members of the board of directors and ratification of its auditor, BDO Seidman LLP. The approved nominees for the board included William Andrews, R. Terry Blakemore, Richard Crouch, Thomas Golonski, Thomas Greig and Edward Nicholson.

Local gas prices spike 10 cents in past week

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the Pittsburgh area was $2.70 yesterday, an increase of almost 10 cents over last week's average price, and about 20 cents more than the average of one month ago, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge report. One year ago, the average price locally was $3.72.

URA board to consider loans for beer companies

The city's Urban Redevelopment Authority may be handing out beer money. The URA board is expected to vote tomorrow on a loan of up to $300,000 to Penn Brewing Co. as part of plans by new owners to keep the brewery and restaurant in Troy Hill. The board also will consider a loan of up to $50,000 for Brookline Beer to help the distributor "finance new working capital to expand its inventory." To provide the money, the URA will have to waive its loan fund guidelines, under which beer distributors are ineligible for money.

AGH neurosurgeon named Drexel chairman

Jack Wilberger Jr., chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Allegheny General Hospital, has been named chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. AGH is the western regional campus for Drexel. Dr. Wilberger is the first Pittsburgh-based Drexel University College of Medicine professor to be appointed as an academic department chairman for the Philadelphia-based campus.

Google provides peek into new search engine

Google has lifted the lid on a new version of its search engine, code-named "Caffeine," that looks the same but ranks results differently. In a blog posting, Google Inc. says the new engine will be faster, more accurate and more comprehensive. To try it yourself, go to www2.sandbox.google.com.

Excela to convert ER into urgent-care center

Excela Health will convert the emergency department at its Jeannette campus to an urgent-care center treating minor injuries and illnesses. During the transition, to be completed by March, the Jeannette emergency department will remain open with no interruption in emergency care, officials said.

The former chief financial officer for Bernard Madoff, Frank DiPascali, pleaded guilty yesterday to 10 charges including conspiracy. There is a potential penalty of 125 years in prison, but Mr. DiPascali's cooperation will likely bring leniency. ... General Motors Co. said yesterday that it submitted its executive compensation proposal to the Obama administration, complying with a requirement for companies bailed out by the federal government. The company did not offer details of the proposal."
