Architecture

Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann Associates added Robert Cunningham as an architectural draftsman in the Butler office; Barbara A. Forestall joins the administration staff in the Ohio office; Christy Borderudis joins the Washington, D.C., office; and Amanda Rudy joins the landscape department as a draftsman in the Pittsburgh office.

John Reese has joined L.D. Astorino Cos. as a senior electrical engineer.

Associations/ Organizations

Marie Milie Jones, a senior partner and managing attorney of Meyer Darragh Buckler Bebenek & Eck, was installed as president of the Pennsylvania Defense Institute.

The Downtown Business Connection announced its newest member ,Rich Soracco.

Allegheny County Bar Association said lawyer Thomas M. Mulroy was appointed to serve a one-year term on the association's judiciary committee; lawyer Stephan K. Todd was appointed to serve a two-year term as a governor on the association's board of governors. Melissa Stauffer has joined The Union Project.

Lawyer James W. Carroll Jr., a member of Rothman Gordon, was nominated and accepted as a fellow of the Allegheny County Bar Foundation.

Thomas J. Briney, architect, corporate vice president/prinicipal, L.D. Astorino Cos., was elected to the board for the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Banking, Finance

Dollar Bank has promoted Chad J. Edwards to residential loan consultant assigned to the Monroeville and Penn Hills branches.

Communications

Mullen appointed Robert Bernardini president and named Michael Provenzano executive vice president of the Pittsburgh office.

Consulting

Corporate Solutions LLC hired Susan Wareham as a senior consultant in the company's J.D.Edwards Practice and promoted Anthony Welsh to principal consultant.

Steve Sloan has been promoted to manager in Protiviti's Pittsburgh office. Protiviti is a provider of independent internal audit and business and technology risk consulting services.

Education

The University of Pittsburgh's Katz Graduate School of Business' Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence added Hilda Pang Fu to its advisory board.

Nicholas P. Cafardi, dean of the Duquesne University School of Law, has been appointed to fill the school's Joseph A. Katarincic Endowed Chair in Legal Process and Civil Procedure.

Health and Medicine

Mon Valley Care Center hired Patricia Volpe as administrator and Rebecca L. McKibben as marketing director.

Carol Kevech was promoted to clinical services manager in the Monongahela office of Albert Gallatin Home Care & Hospice.

Nonprofit

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust named Janis Burley Wilson vice president of education and Community Outreach and appointed Josephine Caminos Oria manager of Public Relations & Publications.

The Society for Contemporary Craft elected new members to its board. Elsa Limbach, freelance choreographer, teacher and performer; Rolf Loeber, Ph.D., co-director of the Life History Studies Program at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and professor of psychiatry in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Psychiatry; and Julia Sawyer, Ph.D., educational consultant.

Law

Burns White & Hickton said John C. Kenny was appointed an associate, and will concentrate his practice in the areas of appellate and commercial litigation; and Victor M. DiBattista has joined and heads the firm's Financial Institutions practice area.

Pepper Hamilton LLP said it had expanded its patent practice with the addition of Raymond A. Miller, who joined as a partner; Joseph Melnik, who joined as an associate; and John E. Pillion, who joined as a patent agent.

Mylan Laboratories Inc. named Patrick J. Gallagher vice president of business development.

Matrix Solutions said Dennis Grinberg will serve as director of software development.

Patricia Prozzi was named president of VITAC. Joseph Karlovits, the founder of VITAC, assumes the role of CEO.

NEW BUSINESS/ NEW OFFICES

Cranberry Manufacturing Co., offering contract manufacturing, including precision machining & mechanical & electromechanical assembly, has moved to a new 110,000-square-foot facility in the Victory Road Industrial Park in Saxonburg. In addition, it has changed the company name to Cygnus Manufacturing Co.

Inspired Celebrations, a store offering gift baskets that are custom made to fit your individual needs, will host its grand opening beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, 2102 Bower Hill Road, Scott. The owner is Jennifer Russell.

The H.F. Lenz Co., headquartered in Johnstown, opened its new branch office at 1051 Brinton Road, Braddock Hills. Groundbreaking ceremonies recently took place in Forward for the new 61,000-square-foot expansion of Ductmate Industries' manufacturing and warehouse facility. With the expansion to be completed by March 2003, Ductmate's Monongahela facility will exceed 200,000 square feet. Ductmate Industries is a premier manufacturer of industrial, commercial and residential sheet metal components for the HVAC building industry worldwide.

The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Help Desk Institute announces the first annual Pittsburgh Help Desk Analyst of the Year Award. This award will recognize a local Pittsburgh Help Desk Analyst who exemplifies the best qualities among the Help Desk practitioners in our region. The winner will have demonstrated extraordinary commitment, dedication and service to customers, while consistently exceeding performance objectives. Nominations will be accepted from managers, co-workers and customers. Nominations must be submitted by Nov. 7. Blue Archer launched its new Web site http://www.bluearcher.com. G&G Fitness Equipment Inc. announced the acquisition of the Pittsburgh division of Exercare Inc. The purchase will grow G&G Fitness to a total of five stores locally and an estimated $17 million in annual sales, making it one of the largest specialty fitness equipment retailers in the Northeast.

Allegheny County Council and the City of Pittsburgh proclaims the month of October as Lead Awareness Month in Pittsburgh. The proclamations offered by Councilman Rich Fitzgerald and Mayor Tom Murphy recognize the Lead Safe Pittsburgh Coalition for its collaborative efforts to eliminate lead poisoning.

Lead Awareness Month activities include Be A Lead Detective festivals, bus shelter campaigns featuring boxer Paul Spadafora, IBF lightweight world champion, and an interactive window display at the Hollow Oak Land Trust office in Corapolis. Additional events include contractor training, education programs for child-care workers, and outreach geared toward homeowners planning home improvement projects. Lead poisoning affects one in four children in Western Pennsylvania and almost 1 million nationally. This is because more than 90 percent of the homes in our region were built before 1978 and may contain hazardous lead based paint. Lead Safe Pittsburgh sponsors a variety of outreach and public awareness programs. Verizon Wireless has tied for the highest ranking (with AT&T Wireless) in customer satisfaction among wireless users in Pittsburgh, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2002 U.S. Wireless Customer Satisfaction Study.

Junior Achievement of Southwest Pennsylvania Inc. has received the nonprofit organization's Peak Performance Team Award. The annual award is given to Junior Achievement offices for outstanding performance in areas such as student growth, total revenue growth and an increase in the number of classes reached during the past fiscal year. The award was presented to the Junior Achievement office during a special ceremony at JA's National Leadership Conference held recently in San Francisco.

Amy J. Braun-Bostich, a financial adviser with American Express Financial Advisors, was honored with the president's recognition award.

Pitt Ohio Express has won two Quality Transportation Awards.

L.D. Astorino Cos. said design architect Michael Kuchera has received certification by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.

Richard Pavetto, an Allstate insurance agent, earned the personal financial representative title.

Julian A. Marturano of The Mony Group has been inducted into the company's Hall of Fame.

Paulette Green of P Green Design has won a silver medal in Neenah Paper's Paperworks Letterhead Design Competition.

The National Mining Association presented Consol Energy Inc. with a "Spirit of America Award" for offering assistance during the July rescue of nine Black Wolf Coal Co. miners at the flooded Quecreek Mine in Somerset County.

The National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians has awarded its 2002 Rocco V. Morando Lifetime Achievement Award to Walt A. Stoy, program director of the Center for Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Laurel Networks Inc. said Light Reading, the global site for optical networks, has appointed Laurel to the No. 1 position on its Top Ten Private Companies List.

Cohen & Grigsby selected Mark R. Stabile as one of "50 On the Fast Track" as designated in The Legal Intelligencer and Pennsylvania Law Weekly.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE/ DOING GOOD

3 Rivers Connect has distributed more than 400 surplus Pentium computers to various Pittsburgh regional schools and community organizations as part of its ongoing, grass-roots "PCs to the People" initiative: 125 computers went to the Boyce Campus Middle College High School; 130 refurbished computers, South Side School District in Beaver County; 120 computers, Hosanna House Inc. for computer training classes for eighth-graders at Wilkinsburg Middle School; 10 computers, the new City High Charter school; six computers, Friendship Academy; 20 computers, the Open Door Community Outreach Center in Aliquippa for use in after-school literacy programs; and 20 laptops, Carnegie Science Center, for a new lab.
