Comparative standings in the most vital Benchmarks Sunday, December 31, 2000
The final 2000 PG Benchmarks results for 12 categories are presented in two ways on this page. Immediately below, they are reduced to numbers, allowing the regions to be ranked. Pittsburgh is sixth among the 15 regions. Rankings, however, can be misleading. For example, a fourth-place baseball team in a five-team division sounds like a poor performer. But that team might be only a game out of first in a division with four equally good teams. To provide a more meaningful view, we also depict the distribution of each region's score in each category on a standardized basis. This is in the large graphic below. Standardizing the raw data offers a way of comparing data, where some categories are described in dollars per capita, others as percent change and others as indexes. We standardized the raw data by subtracting the average (across regions) in each category from the individual region's score, then dividing by the standard deviation for that series of scores. The standardization assumes that each category follows a uniform distribution around 100 and that the scores will tend to cluster around 100.
