Associations & Organizations

The Air & Waste Management Association said Jim Powell joined as executive director.

The Pittsburgh chapter (District 2) of the American Advertising Federation announced the hiring of Nancy Richert as executive director.

Clubs

Three new members of the Century Club of Distinguished Duquesne University Alumni were inducted Sept. 28. They are: Martin J. Ashby, (graduate music, 1991), executive producer, MCG Jazz Manchester Craftsmen's Guild; Judge Kate Ford Elliott, (graduate education, 1973, law, 1978), president judge emeritus, Superior Court of Pennsylvania; and Thaddeus J. Senko, (business, 1978), global partner in charge, KPMG.

Education

Travis Kruse, a wealth management advisor with Fifth Third Bank, has joined the board of trustees of The Early Learning Institute through the Leadership on Board program.

David A. Vorp, William Kepler Whiteford professor of bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering, was appointed associate dean for research at the Swanson School, effective Oct. 15. Mr. Vorp succeeds Mark Redfern, who was named as Pitt's vice provost for research in August.

Engineering

Prudent Engineering hired Jerome J. Schwertz as manager of its Wexford office.

Michael Baker Jr. Inc., a unit of Michael Baker Corp. said John S. Prizner Jr. joined Baker's Connecticut office as vice president, east region manager of rail and transit.

Energy

FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., announced management changes.

Raymond A. Lieb was promoted to site vice president of Davis-Besse. Richard D. Bologna succeeds Mr. Lieb as director of site operations. Beaver Valley design engineering manager Carmen Mancuso will serve as acting director of engineering at the site until a permanent replacement is named.

Financial

First Commonwealth Financial Corp. promoted Michael E. Bartolini to president & CEO, First Commonwealth Insurance Agency, a subsidiary of First Commonwealth Financial Corporation.

Health

Allegheny Valley Hospital is pleased to welcome obstetrician gynecologists Jenny E. Halfhill and Rebecca H. Schnatz of Century Medical Associates to its medical staff.

Media

Lisa Sieber has joined SHADY AVE magazine as a sales associate.

Nonprofit

Passavant Memorial Homes appointed Kevin Friel as chief financial officer.

Professional Services

Heyl & Patterson Inc. named Jeremy Morrow treasurer.

Susan Falcone joined Hair Direct as content developer.

Awards/Honors

Gwen Watkins, events coordinator for community service in the University of Pittsburgh's Office of Community and Governmental Affairs, was named a Dignity & Respect Champion. In her work at Pitt, she develops partnerships with community food banks, clothing drives and other initiatives such as People for Pets, mobilizing more than 400 university volunteers.

Carol Utay, co-founder and executive director of Total Learning Centers, was selected as the winner of the Inspired Woman Award for 2012. This award was designed to honor a woman who shines as an outstanding leader in the community.

The Arthroscopy Association of North America honored S. Joshua Szabo of Tri Rivers Surgical Associates with the Stephen J. Snyder Excellence in Teaching Award. The award is given annually by AANA to one physician, based on his or her teaching evaluations.

The AIA-MBA Joint Committee said Pasquale "Pat" Navarro is the recipient of the 2012 James Kling Fellowship Award. Mr. Navarro retired as president from Navarro Corporation in the late 1980s. The James Kling Fellowship Award was established by the AIA-MBA Joint Committee to recognize those individuals who best exemplify collaboration between the design and constructor professions.
