Herbein + Co., Inc. appointed Alex J. Patterson as staff accountant.

Associations & Organizations

Pittsburgh Planned Giving Council announced two additions to its board of trustees: vice president: Emily Peters, director of gift planning, Chatham University; and conference co-chairman: J. Victor Conrad, founder of Pinnacle Financial Strategies.

Education

University of Pittsburgh The Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence hired James Remcheck as program manager of the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Program.

Engineering

Rettew named new shareholders. D. Eric Brinser, manager of its land development group: Rebecca S. Denlinger, regional manager; Brian W. Engle, director, land development services; David E. Hoglund, manager of bridge engineering, transportation group; Charles L. Myers, department head of energy services, environmental engineering group; and John B. Stipe III, manager, environmental sciences group.

Health

Linda Ollis joined Mon Health System as Mon General Hospital chief operating officer.

Family Hospice and Palliative Care named new members to its board: Bruce J. Austin, senior vice president and business banking manager, First National Bank; and Kim Ward Burns, partner, Thorp Reed & Armstrong.

Monongahela Valley Hospital recently established the Office of Fund Development. Sara Schumacher was named vice president of fund development and Jack Robinson, director of the capital campaign.

Manufacturing

WE-EF Lighting USA hired Abbey Beresik-Renfrew as marketing manager for North America.

Nonprofit

The Early Learning Institute named Rep. Daniel Deasy, D-Westwood, and Dean Datre to its board of trustees. Mr. Deasy, who was elected to the state House in 2008, joins TELI's board as a parent representative. Mr. Datre is general manager of the UPS Division at Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc.

Jewish Family & Children's Service hired Emily Leone as public relations associate.

Professional Services

Ernst & Young LLP promoted Vaughn Cook to partner in its assurance practice.

Retail

GNC Holdings Inc. promoted Thomas Dowd to executive vice president, chief merchandising officer and general manager; Jeffrey Hennion, executive vice president, chief marketing officer; and Darryl Green, senior vice president, domestic store operations.

Elsewhere

Pittsburgh native Dave Cole was appointed president of Transitions Optical Inc., Pinellas Park, Fla.

Awards/Honors

Nicole Manns was named to Pittsburgh Courier's Fab 40. Ms. Manns is affirmative action group manager of BNY Mellon and directs the company's Affirmative Action Compliance for its 30,000-plus U.S. employees. The Courier named Ms. Manns to its recent Fabulous 40 under 40 list. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh in 1993.

Jane Campbell Moriarty was named the inaugural Carol Los Mansmann Chair in Faculty Scholarship at Duquesne University's School of Law. She will begin her new role on Aug. 16. The Mansmann chair is awarded to a faculty member who exhibits great accomplishment in legal scholarship, has the potential to contribute to the scholarly output of the law school faculty, and is acknowledged as a leader by disciplinary peers nationally and at Duquesne.

The Frick Art & Historical Center said Ronald Holloway is the recipient of the 2011 Roy A. Hunt Foundation Award for Commitment to Education in the Arts and Humanities. Mr. Holloway is a second-grade teacher at Pittsburgh Weil PreK-5 Accelerated Learning Academy in the Pittsburgh Public School District.

G. John Kurgan, executive vice president of Michael Baker Corp., was named an outstanding engineering alumnus by the Penn State College of Engineering. Established in 1966, the Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award recognizes graduates who have reached exceptional levels of professional achievement and is the highest honor bestowed by the College.

Gregory Skowron, executive director, intelligence and network capabilities at Concurrent Technologies Corp., received the Patriot Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The ESGR is a Department of Defense organization that focuses on promoting cooperation and understanding between National Guard and Reserve members and their civilian employers. The Patriot Award, which is based on employee nomination, recognizes employers who support a strong National Guard and Reserve force.

Finance Fund, a statewide nonprofit financial intermediary, presented the 2010 Community Champion Award to David Gibson, senior vice president with PNC Financial Services Group. Finance Fund presents the Community Champion Award annually to individuals who have exhibited extraordinary service to their community.

Duquesne University School of Law Dean Ken Gormley received the 2011 American Bar Association Gavel Award for his book, "The Death of American Virtue: Clinton vs. Starr," earning the honorable mention designation (second place) in the book category. The ABA Gavel Awards, established in 1958, recognize products in the media and the arts that are exemplary in fostering the American public's understanding of the law and the legal system.
