The Cell Transplantation Program at The Western Pennsylvania Cancer Institute, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, has been granted accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy. FACT accreditation demonstrates commitment to quality in cellular therapy and blood and marrow transplantation through adherence to rigorous standards, as verified by periodic inspections and peer review.

S&T Bank said Nicole Killian of Evergreen Insurance Associates LLC, a subsidiary of S&T Insurance Group LLC, earned the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist designation by successfully completing an intensive eight-course program.

George K. Michalopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., the Maud L. Menten professor and chair of pathology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, received the 2009 American Society for Investigative Pathology Rous-Whipple Award, presented annually to a senior scientist with a distinguished career in research who continues to advance the understanding of disease. Dr. Michalopoulos was honored for his research regarding the pathways of growth factors that lead the liver to regenerate.

Gateway Rehab was awarded a gold medal from the Hermes Creative Awards 2009 competition in the "Newspaper Placement" category for an opinion editorial authored by Kenneth S. Ramsey, president and CEO, Gateway, titled, "Sunday Forum: Raise the Drinking Age or at least don't lower it, as some college presidents would like us to consider." The piece ran in a Sunday issue of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. And Gateway's public relations department earned honorable mention in the "Integrated Marketing Materials" category for its efforts in highlighting Gateway's position as a regional and national leader in addiction treatment through the organization's annual report, newsletters, advertisements, media highlights video and promotional printed pieces. The competition is judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals.

The Washington County Chamber of Commerce said Betsie Trew of the Washington County Community Foundation was the 2009 Washington County ATHENA Award recipient. The 2009 Finalists included: Bernadette Adams, Washington/Greene County Job Training Agency; Christine Blaine, Washington Wild Things; Judy Hopson, Washington Arts and Cultural Center (Wash Arts); Kim Malinky, Canonsburg General Hospital; Amy Ross Manko, Washington County Literacy Council; and Lee Young, Penn State Cooperative Extension -- Washington County.

Steve Oslica, director of marketing, Pittsburgh Corning, was awarded the honor of "Business-to-Business Marketer of the Year" for excellence at the 2009 Bizmark Awards presented by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Business Marketing Association.

Ronald Lasich, president/CEO, Visionary Federal Credit Union of Bridgeville, is one of six national credit union leaders inducted to the 2009 Credit Union House "Hall of Leaders."

Dr. MaryBeth Pope Salama, team physician, VITAS Innovative Hospice Care of Greater Pittsburgh, was certified by the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. This distinction places Dr. Salama among a select group of physicians who have met the highest clinical and academic standards of the hospice and palliative medicine specialty.

Eight attorneys at Rothman Gordon P.C. have been named Pennsylvania Super Lawyers for 2009. Recognized lawyers include R. Douglas DeNardo, James W. Ummer and K. Sidney Neuman for estates planning and probate; Thomas R. Solomich for real estate; Shelley W. Elovitz for workers' compensation; and James W. Carroll Jr., Stephen H. Jordan and Louis B. Kushner for labor & employment. In addition, Mr. Kushner was named one of The Top 100 Pennsylvania Super Lawyers. Mr. Kushner and Mr. Solomich were both listed on The Top 50 Pittsburgh Super Lawyers.

Julie J. Herstine and Lucas Rihely, Cottrill, Arbutina Professional Services, received their licenses as certified public accountants by the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy.

Desmone & Associates Architects is one of 44 nationally top performing firms that has been selected by PSMJ Resources Inc., the premier management consulting firm for the architecture, engineering and construction industries, to be included on their 2009 PSMJ Circle of Excellence. The Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. of Western Pennsylvania also presented Desmone with the 2009 Architect/Engineer of the Year Award.
