The University of Pittsburgh appointed Bradley J. Franc, attorney, Houston Harbaugh, to its board of trustees. Because the university is part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, all new candidates must be nominated by the governor.

U.S. Steel Corp. announced the executive leadership for three of its newly created commercial entities. Joseph R. Scherrbaum will serve as acting vice president, industrial solutions; Geoff M. Turk will serve as vice president, service center solutions and Lawrence W. Sutherland will serve as acting head, mining solutions, effective Jan. 1.
Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh named Alex Thinath to its board. Mr. Thinath is an analyst in PNC Financial Services’ Strategic Initiatives Office.

Awards and Honors
Julia Fennell, professor of English at Community College of Allegheny County, received the National Collegiate Honors Council Ron Brandolini Award for Excellence at a Two-Year Institution for her work with CCAC’s Honors Program and at the national level. Ms. Fennell was presented with the award at the NCHC Conference on Nov. 8 in Denver. She is one of only two individuals to receive this inaugural award, given to recognize a two-year college honors director or faculty member for outstanding contributions to the honors community.
Pittsburgh Association of Manufacturers Representatives awarded Eugene Tommasi, executive vice president of Giant Eagle, as the Humanitarian of the Year for his service and commitment to The Education Partnership and Young Life. Mr. Tommasi has served on The Education Partnership’s Board of Directors since July, 2009 and is treasurer of the board as well as a member of the executive committee.
Jeffry Madura was named the recipient of the 2014 Pittsburgh Award by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society. Mr. Madura is the Lambert F. Minucci endowed chair in engineering and computational sciences and a professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at Duquesne University.
Randall Tecza, vice president of operations for Guardian Protection Services, was selected by Security Systems News for its “20 Under 40” recognition, which honors 20 talented young professionals who are on a path to become the next generation of security industry leaders.
Dollar General opened at new store at 5800 Buttermilk Hollow Road.
Landau Building Co. was awarded the Interior Renovations–Radiology Department Phase 3 at Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital. Renovations began in October and are expected to be completed by September 2015.
