The lone store Downtown that catered to Apple lovers is closing.

MacOutfitters will shut its doors for good at 6 p.m. Friday after four years at One Oxford Centre on Grant Street.

Adam Wolf, the store manager, confirmed the closing Wednesday. He wasn't sure of the reasons behind it.

"We're trying to compact a little bit, I guess," he said.

While other stores Downtown sell iPads or iPhones, MacOutfitters is the only one that specializes in Apple products. It also is the only one to sell Apple laptops and desktop computers.

Now Apple fans will have to visit Apple corporate stores in Shadyside, South Hills Village or Ross Park Mall or the other MacOutfitters store in Cranberry.

The store is the latest loss for One Oxford Centre, which at one time was a prime upscale shopping destination Downtown. There are now several retail vacancies on the second floor. Most of the retail and restaurant space on the third floor is empty except for the Emphatics clothing store and a financial services business.

Oxford officials did not respond to a request for comment.

Oxford Centre is picking up one retailer in Buon Sapore, a store that sells merchandise imported from Italy. It is moving Downtown after 4 1/2 years at SouthSide Works. The store is expected to open next week.

Co-owner Mary Dozzi said the new location is more suited to the store's audience than SouthSide Works.

"We like this location. We think it's a more mature group of people who would like the products we have here," she said. "We just feel this location is better suited for us."

Ms. Dozzi said store hours also were a factor in the relocation. At SouthSide Works, the store had to be open nine to 11 hours a day, six days a week and six hours on Sunday. At Oxford, it will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment in the evening and on Saturdays.

She added that she and her husband, Carlo, the co-owner, had considered Oxford Centre for the store before deciding to open at SouthSide Works. Before that, Buon Sapore was located in the West End.
