In the Lead is the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's latest endeavor examining the region's business community. We are exploring, in this inaugural edition, the various aspects of that elusive concept of "leadership."
We asked how leaders emerged from companies to take on the challenge of creating their own businesses. We talked to experts about how excellence is achieved. Business leaders told us how they handle change at the top. We found out what are the qualities of today's best leaders and the challenges facing the leaders of tomorrow.
Profiles in Leadership, our snapshot insights from a wide array of business leaders, is a textbook study of the depth of Pittsburgh's leadership pool.

This magazine is also about change.
Some two decades ago, the Post-Gazette started a section devoted to examining the Top 50 largest public companies in the Pittsburgh region.
Needless to say, the region is very different today. Companies have come and gone. CEOs have been replaced. The economy has been dramatically altered.
Now we are changing, too.
We are keeping the best of the past and will continue to measure and rank the Top 50 companies on everything from net income to return on equity and market capitalization. We're also looking at foundations, health care organizations and colleges.
But In the Lead gives us a chance to examine the issues affecting not only those 50 biggest companies, but businesses large and small in the region.
Our format has changed as well. This new magazine affords us the opportunity to showcase our region's businesses in ways we couldn't before.
In the Lead is meant to be an indispensable resource, a guide to the best of the region's business community and a lesson on how you can aspire to take the reins where you work
