Not everyone can fly like a Giant Eagle

“Giant Eagle Chief Laura Karet Gets in Front of the Camera,” April 27, relates how Giant Eagle CEO/tsarina — and don’t forget, Pittsburgher! — Laura Karet deigned to ap­pear in TV ads with her smil­ing-for-the-cam­era-em­ploy­ees while tout­ing how much Giant Eagle cares for the com­mu­nity by pro­mot­ing con­tri­bu­tions to food lo­cal banks, etc.

Why now?

Maybe be­cause the once Hughe­sian-shy “Ig­gle” is los­ing its vir­tual “tal­on­hold” on the area, what with Bottom Dollar Food and Aldi’s that offer prices that working-class fam­i­lies — in­clud­ing Giant Eagle em­ploy­ees — can ac­tu­ally af­ford?

You want to give to your com­mu­nity?

Start with liv­ing wages for em­ploy­ees in­stead of hugs.

Not ev­ery­one can spread their wings and fly like an “Ig­gle” or roost in Fox Chapel like the scion Ms. Karet.
