UPMC reports it contributed $887 million in community-focused programs

UPMC says it contributed $887 million in community-focused programs in fiscal 2013, with $268 million in charity care and unreimbursed payments for programs such as Medical Assistance, $238 million to support more than 3,000 health and disease prevention programs and $381 million for the education and training of future clinicians and researchers.

The total represents a $265 million increase from fiscal 2012.

The region's largest health system estimates it had $200 million in unreimbursed payments from Medicare and more than $60 million in care for which it received no payment.
