Buffalo-based First Niagara Financial Group plans to close two area branches — sites in Irwin and Murrysville — and eliminate 20 jobs in this region, as part of an overall shift to reduce in-branch services as more customers use online and mobile banking.

The company today announced it will be cutting a total of 170 administrative positions across its four-state operation as part of the changes.

As part of the same shift, First Niagara said it has promoted more than 200 branch employees, including 33 in the Pittsburgh region, to positions that “enable them to broaden their responsibilities and grow their careers.”
