The Pirates optioned catcher Tony Sanchez to Class AAA Indianapolis Friday afternoon and recalled infielder Josh Harrison from Indianapolis.
Sanchez went 2 for 8 in two games with the Pirates on their road trip, when they played in American League ballparks that allowed them to use the designated hitter. The Pirates likely wanted Harrison's defensive versatility now that they returned to National League play.
Sanchez made his major league debut Sunday. He was the Pirates' first overall draft pick in 2009.
Harrison has hit .316 with Indianapolis this season.
