The city bomb squad was called to Brighton Heights tonight after a man thought he spotted a grenade near an apartment complex for senior citizens.

Detective Michael Burns said the bomb squad was called to Riverview Manor about 4 p.m. for a report that a man had spotted a possible grenade between a Dumpster and a parked car.

The device appears to be a grenade, Detective Burns said, but police will not know for sure whether it is live for a few more days.

He said police have no idea how the device ended up near the complex, but it's common for relatives to discard them when they're cleaning out a loved one's war souvenirs.

Investigators prefer that families who stumble upon grenades and other explosives contact police so that they can safely dispose of them, Detective Burns said.
