Three local community colleges have been honored for their efforts to help students complete college.

Community College of Allegheny County, Community College of Beaver County and Westmoreland County Community College are among 23 institutions nationwide named Leader Colleges by Achieving the Dream, a national nonprofit aimed at helping community college students complete certificates and degrees.

Each school has taken initiatives aimed at improving completion rates.

Initiatives at CCAC, for example, have helped the college increase the overall completion rates for students who take remedial courses. The two-year rate has grown from 27.3 percent of students who began in 2005 to 35.4 percent for those who began in 2009. In 2005, there were 828 students who successfully completed remedial coursework, and in 2009 there were 1,260 such students.
