Retired Philadelphia state Rep. William Rieger is dead at age 87.

Rieger died of a brain hemorrhage at Temple University Hospital on Friday, according to funeral director Bob Burns of Burns Funeral Home in Philadelphia.

The Democrat represented a city district in the Legislature for 40 years.

The House Ethics Committee in 2004 cleared Rieger of charges he improperly arranged to vote when not in the chamber, a practice known as "ghost voting." He was an Ethics Committee member at the time but didn't participate in the review of his case.

He retired from the General Assembly three years ago.
