Pittsburgh Councilman Patrick Dowd will challenge Mayor Luke Ravenstahl in the May 19 Democratic primary, he said today.
"I am going to announce that I am running for mayor some time this week," he said. "I believe that the city needs leadership and vision, and we'll be talking about what we mean by that later this week."
Mr. Dowd, 40, of Highland Park, was elected to council in 2007 after serving a term on the Pittsburgh Public Schools board. He is a former private school teacher.
Mr. Ravenstahl, 29, of Summer Hill, was first elected to council in 2003, ascended to the mayor's office upon the Sept. 1, 2006, death of Mayor Bob O'Connor, and easily bested Republican challenger Mark DeSantis in 2007.
