Shavonte Zellous scored 34 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the 19th-ranked Pitt women's basketball team to an impressive 72-63 win over West Virginia in their Big East opener this afternoon before a crowd of 4,528 at the Petersen Events Center.
It was the second most points Zellous, who scored 28 in the second half, has scored in a game during her career and she did it while shooting 60 percent (12-for-20) from the field.
The victory was also a milestone of sorts for Pitt coach Agnus Berenato as it represented her 100th win as the Panthers coach. Berenato, who is in her sixth season, is now 100-68 with the Panthers.
Pitt (11-2, 1-0 in the Big East) will next play at Providence Wednesday then return home Saturday to play host to South Florida. West Virginia (10-3, 0-1) was led by Takisha Granberry, who scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Liz Repella, who scored 18.
