Two members of the city's Emergency Medical Services team rappeled down the side of Mount Washington between McArdle Roadway and mount's base along Carson Street last night to rescue a man trapped on the steep hillside.

The rescuers used ropes and a harness to bring the 31-year-old South Hills man back up to safety.

Traffic was detoured from McArdle Roadway between the Liberty Bridge and Grandview Avenue for more than two hours after rescuers learned of the man's predicament shortly after 9 p.m.

One witness said the man, who was taken to a local hospital, claimed to have fallen down the hillside while walking along McArdle. Police said he was charged with disorderly conduct. No other details were available last night.
