Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's campaign today reported a good response to his Monday morning announcement that he is running for the office he's held since Sept. 1.

Its Web site drew 300 offers to volunteer, according to Necia Hobbes, the campaign coordinator, plus offers of donations.

"I think [the response] is positive and exciting," the mayor said. "Now we have a way to collect the volunteers, in addition to the people who stop me in the street and have me write down their names and phone numbers."

The May 15 Democratic primary will determine the instant front-runner to serve out the last two years of the term won last year by Bob O'Connor, who succumbed to cancer. Mr. Ravenstahl is so far the only declared candidate.
