Gertrude Marshall lived on a farm in West Deer for more than half of her life, first as a girl and later as the wife of a farmer. Now living in an apartment in Mars, she celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday.

She was born Oct. 1, 1912, a middle child of 16 born to Charles and Millie Welling. She lived first in Ellsworth, then Cokeburg and, finally, West Deer. In 1931, she married Samuel Marshall, a World War I veteran and farmer in West Deer. They had four children: Clark of Cranberry, Larry and Tom, both of Palm Bay, Fla., and Arlene of Fort Worth, Texas.

Mrs. Marshall was a Cub Scout den mother in the late 1940s and early '50s. She is a member of Gospel Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Valencia and has eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

'Fun' aunt, longtime teacher

Louise Harned Garrison was the "fun" aunt, says William Miller of Lancaster, one of many nephews and nieces who loved to visit Aunt Louise.

"She was the most positive person you would ever want to meet. She loved to tell jokes, laugh and have fun," he said.

On Monday, Mrs. Garrison celebrated her 100th birthday with family members in Lund Care Center at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot.

She was born Oct. 1, 1912. She married Lynn Garrison, and they had one daughter, Marilyn Goldstrom, who died in 1999. Mr. Garrison is also deceased.

Mrs. Garrison, a great reader and dog lover, taught fourth grade for 40 years in Natrona Heights. She has two grandsons and moved to Concordia's Haven I in May 1999.
