Garard Mallon, 6, shows the wounds he
received in early July while playing in Belfast at the peace wall that separates his
Catholic housing estate on Lower Springfield Road from Protestant neighborhood on Shankill
Road. Garard was playing with his friends when Protestant youths on the other side of the
wall started throwing snooker balls. Despite his injuries, Garard says he continues to
play there because there are no play areas in his housing estate. The peace wall was built
in 1969 to separate the two neighborhoods and quell the violence.
