After harsh winter, cars need a little TLC

The last snowfall may have finally melted, but the effects of Western Pennsylvania’s record-breaking winter are still evident – salt-stained streets, roads riddled with potholes and our cars, making suspicious noises and perhaps even sporting new scratches and dents after trekking through the season’s rain, sleet and snow.

Even if your car seems to have made it out unscathed, chances are that it still experienced significant wear and tear these past four months. Jack Fedor, parts and service director at Benson Lincoln in Whitehall, said that the winter’s harsh climate can significantly affect a vehicle in three main areas – its battery, its suspension and wheel alignment, and its wiper blades. Car owners can easily assess the condition of their vehicles once they know what they’re looking for.

“If your vehicle is slow to start, you should have the condition of its battery checked out,” said Mr. Fedor. “If your vehicle steers to one side or another or your steering wheel is off center this is a sign that the vehicle may need a wheel alignment.”

Car owners should also examine their vehicle’s wiper blades for any tears in the rubber and replace them if necessary.

It’s also worth checking the tire tread during this seasonal assessment. To do this, simply insert a penny into the tread of each tire, near the center. If the tread doesn’t cover any portion of Abraham Lincoln’s head, you should have them checked out by a reliable mechanic.

If you’re looking for a reliable mechanic, you may want to consider Benson Lincoln’s Quick Lane Service Center. Its factory-trained experts, who perform the services that your car needs, are dedicated to doing the work right the first time, every time. No appointment is necessary and customers are promised service while they wait – even on weekends. Most services take 30 minutes or less and the drive-through facility allows customers to drop their cars off and pick them up while staying out of the elements.

The dealership services most makes and models and uses quality parts from Motorcraft. It offers 13 major tire brands including Goodyear, Continental Tire, Michelin, Uniroyal and more. And if you don’t want to check your vehicle for seasonal damage, Benson Lincoln’s Quick Lane Service Center will do it for you.

“Anyone can bring their vehicle to our Quick Lane and have a free multi-point inspection done to see what toll the winter had had on it,” said Mr. Fedor. “We will check the fluid levels, wiper blades, battery condition, brakes and tires. We will also check the lights, belts and steering and give you a full report.”
