The new 2014 Ram EcoDiesel-powered 1500 rolls into Pittsburgh this year with performance, power and some compelling gas-mileage grades from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Engineered with lightweight, yet durable materials, the half-ton pickup truck offers the capability of a working vehicle with the economy of a compact car, along with some interior features that can make it a comfortable and user-friendly ride.
Equipped with the new EcoDiesel engine, the Ram 1500 earned a 28-miles-per-gallon highway rating from the EPA, exceeding the agency’s ratings for a full-sized, half-ton pickup. It also exceeds the agency’s rating for a top-ranked small pickup.
Bill Kelly, owner and president of KellyCars in Moon Township, said that his customers will be pleased with the bump in mpg.
“Fuel efficiency is very important to our customers,” he said. “I believe that the new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will be very well received when it arrives in April.”
Last year, Ram set standards for fuel-efficiency for such pickups, and it is believed it will set the same standards this year. When it’s equipped with the gasoline 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, it still gets 25 miles per gallon on the highway.
That gives Ram two top places in the EPA’s highway fuel economy ratings for half-ton pickups.

Named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines for 2014, the EcoDiesel V6 was a significant factor in the Ram 1500’s selection as the 2014 Motor Trend Truck of the Year. The Ram 1500 has won the award in back-to-back years.
It’s a distinction that Mr. Kelly said is well deserved.
“There’s no question that the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is deserving of the back-to-back awards,” he said. “Great fuel economy combined with great towing capacity and the latest technology features makes for a great truck.”
The new 3.0-liter 24-valve EcoDiesel is a turbocharged 60-degree V6. The EcoDiesel packs a bit of a wallop, delivering 240 horsepower and peak torque of 420 lb.-ft.
The engine block and bedplate are made from lightweight compacted graphite iron, with performance enhanced by its MultiJet 2 common-rail fuel-injection system. MultiJet 2’s high-dispersion nozzles and servovalve system accommodate up to eight fuel-injection events per cylinder cycle.
For the driver, that means a smooth, quiet ride and an improved low-throttle response, all while keeping a little bit of that gas money in his or her pocket.
Chrysler Group’s TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission provides optimal engine speed in a wide range of driving conditions. The advanced-technology gearbox benefits from a thermal-management system that quickly warms transmission oil to reduce pumping losses associated with cold, low-viscosity fluid. So be it warm or cold, wet or dry, you’re in good hands.
The 2014 Ram 1500’s efficiencies are not restricted to powertrain technologies. Other key features include active grille shutters that optimize air flow for improved aerodynamics; electric power steering, which relieves the engine from constantly turning a hydraulic pump; and thoughtful material-use strategies that leverage lightweight aluminum for components, such as hoods, that do not compromise capability.
And Ram 1500’s ecological footprint is small, as well. The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel features selective catalytic reduction, high-pressure cooled exhaust fuel recirculation, variable swirl intake ports and a variable-geometry turbocharger. This makes the vehicle compliant with emissions regulations in all 50 states in America.
Ram 1500’s new exterior pays tribute to the Ram history with a bold, sleek look. It comes in assorted cab and box configurations. Its Crew Cab, Short Box gives passengers the most legroom in the Ram lineup, great for hauling the guys and your gear to any job site. It seats up to six, with 40.3 inches of legroom, and a bed length of 5 feet, 7 inches.
The available Crew Cab, Mid Box mixes bed volume and cabin comfort, designed for those who carry everybody and everything. It also seats up to six and has 40.3 inches of legroom, but its bed length is 6 feet, 4 inches. Ram’s Regular Cab options seat up to three, with a bed 6 feet, 4 inches. The long-box model is noted for having the most forward cabin space in the Ram line-up.
Meanwhile, Ram 1500’s interior combines the hand-crafted quality of a luxury vehicle with the down-to-earth resiliency of a working truck. Bold instrumentation and an available configurative multi-view cluster and seven-inch color display allow drivers access to whatever information they need for the road ahead. Push-button displays attractively mounted on the robust steering wheel allow the driver to access information in what Chrysler officials like to call a “rolling office.”
The starting price for the 2014 Ram 1500 is $24,200 plus a $1,195 destination fee. The exclusive V6 EcoDiesel with TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission is priced $2,850 greater than a similarly equipped Ram 1500 with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with TorqueFlite 8-speed transmission.
