Post-Gazette TV writer Rob Owen answers reader questions online every Friday in Tuned In Journal blog at post-gazette.com/tv. Here’s a selection of recent queries.
Q: After being demoted to weekend duties, did WTAE meteorologist Steve MacLaughlin leave WTAE? — DAVID, KITTANNING
Rob: His last day on WTAE was in late February. He’s now working at the NBC affiliate in Miami. His move is unsurprising considering WTAE shifted him from weekdays to weekends last summer.
Q: What is the next step in the rehabilitation of Brian Williams? After several months of exile after his ouster as “NBC Nightly News” anchor, he re-emerged as a “breaking news” specialist on MSNBC. Now, in addition to his breaking news duties, he has a regular late-night MSNBC news program, “The 11th Hour,” which I’ve found to be informative, entertaining and mostly nonpartisan. And we saw a lot of him in the week leading up to the presidential inauguration. Does MSNBC or NBC News plan to give Brian any more visibility or responsibilities? (Do you think he’ll ever make another appearance on the parent network again?) — MARK ABRAMOWITZ, SQUIRREL HILL
Rob: In time, I think anything shy of anchoring “NBC Nightly News” again on a regular basis is possible. At the moment, NBC is keeping its cards close to the vest in terms of what the future holds for Mr. Williams.
Q: One of my favorite TV shows was “The Mole” with Anderson Cooper as host. It disappeared after two seasons, I think, with a pathetic “Celebrity Mole” the final episode. Any chance it will ever return? I know Cooper won’t be back but it’d be great to see its return. — DAN, OAKLAND
Rob: In this era of reboots, anything is possible, so I wouldn’t count “The Mole” out. But I also haven’t heard anything about a network redeveloping it.
Q: It’s been years since I’ve enjoyed the shows on BBC America like “Ground Force,” “Monarch of the Glen” and “Cash in the Attic” to name a few. Is there any way to find networks or archives that still have these shows available? Or is my only recourse to try to buy them somewhere. Any advice? — JONI, BRIDGEVILLE
Rob: “Ground Force” is available on DVD but fan.tv doesn’t list any online sources for episodes. Episodes of “Monarch of the Glen” are on DVD and on Netflix. I couldn’t find “Cash in the Attic” episodes anywhere through fan.tv or Amazon. You can always search YouTube and see if someone posted them there.
Q: Has the Starz series “Outlander” been renewed and if so when will it air? — PAT, CRAFTON HEIGHTS
Rob: “Outlander” will be back in September on Starz.
Q: A reader (Walter) wanted to know how to get “Columbo” reruns. I’ve been getting many of them on Hallmark Movies/Mysteries and METV. — ROBERT, NESHANNOCK TOWNSHIP
Rob: Robert is right! Walter had asked about Netflix specifically and streaming services, but it’s worth mentioning that “Columbo” reruns also play on HMM at 7 a.m. weekdays and on WPXI digital subchannel ME-TV at 8 p.m. Sundays.
