The Pittsburgh Dance Council announced today that “Restless Creature,” starring acclaimed New York City Ballet principal Wendy Whelan, has been canceled.

The performance, scheduled for March 22 at Byham Theater, premiered last summer at Jacob’s Pillow and featured Ms. Whelan in collaboration with four emerging male choreographers: Joshua Beamish (MOVE: the company); Brian Brooks (Brian Brooks Moving Company); Alejandro Cerrudo (Hubbard Street Dance Chicago); and Pittsburgh native Kyle Abraham (Abraham.In.Motion).

“Following hip surgery that took place just one week after the Aug. 14, 2013, premiere of ‘Restless Creature,’ Wendy Whelan, in consultation with her doctors, concluded that her body needs more time to heal,” said Dance Council executive director Paul Organisak in a statement.

“I have worked diligently following my surgery to meet my deadline for being rehearsal ready, but I simply need more time to strengthen and heal. I have to honor my body’s wishes,” Ms. Whelan said in a statement.

Dance Council season subscribers and single ticket holders can exchange tickets to “Restless Creature” for another 2013-14 Dance Council performance or for tickets to a show during the 2014-15 Dance Council season. Refunds also are available. Information: 412-456-6666.
