Shakespeare contest finalists picked

What began with 1,000 students in grades 4 through 12 is down to a chosen few in Pittsburgh Public Theater's 19th annual Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest. The participants in Monday's finalists showcase were chosen Friday night by a team of judges in a process that began March 14.

Winners will be picked in grades 8-12 and grades 4-7. Admission is free for the finals, which begin at 7 p.m. at the O'Reilly Theater, Downtown. Here are the finalists:

Lower Division Monologue

Charlotte Bush, Hope Academy, Malvolio from "Twelfth Night"; Emily Bassett, Winchester Thurston, Portia from "The Merchant of Venice"; Natalie Daninhirsch, Carson Middle School, Mistress Page from "The Merry Wives of Windsor"; Adelle Fernando, Ingomar Middle School, Helena from "All's Well That Ends Well"; Jeri Stoller, Fort Couch Middle School, Wall from "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; Eva Hendricks, Ellis School, Rosalind from "As You Like It"; A.J. Molder, Winchester Thurston, Juliet from "Romeo and Juliet"; Julia Coblin, CAPA, Falstaff from "The Merry Wives of Windsor."

Lower Division Scene

Riley Smith, Mason Blackburn and Tess Majewski, Marshall Middle School, Phebe, Silvius and Rosalind from "As You Like It"; Tanner Schmitt, Joey Belanger and Ryan Showalter, Highcliff Elementary, Second Merchant, Antipholus of E. and Angelo from "The Comedy of Errors"; Mira Morris and Anna Schwartz, Hoover Elementary, Nurse and Juliet from "Romeo and Juliet"; Zoey Myers and Justin Bees, CAPA, Cleopatra and Antony from "Antony and Cleopatra."
