The musical stage version of "Flashdance," adapted from the 1983 Pittsburgh-set movie, already has an opening North American date -- at Heinz Hall, Jan. 1-6. Now it's coming to Broadway.

"Flashdance -- The Musical" will arrive on Broadway in August 2013, producers announced yesterday.

The musical has been substantially rewritten and restaged after its London world premiere in 2010, Playbill.com reported. The movie starred Jennifer Beals as a welder by day, Pittsburgh club dancer by night who aspired to an elite dancing academy.

The PNC Broadway Across America -- Pittsburgh show at Heinz Hall will move on to two dozen other markets, while a separate company prepares for New York, The Associated Press said.

The musical is directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, choreographer of "Jersey Boys," "Memphis" and "The Addams Family."

The book is by Tom Hedley, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Eszterhas, and Robert Cary. Familiar songs include the Oscar-winning "Flashdance -- What a Feeling," "Maniac" and "I Love Rock & Roll," along with 10 new songs by Mr. Cary (lyrics) and Robbie Roth (music).
