Nied's Hotel Band makes a 'Stand'

Slim Forsythe isn't the only thing coming out of the Nied's Hotel in Lawrenceville.

The Nied's Hotel Band, a veteran ensemble pouring out a high-energy blend of rock, blues and soul, is dropping its latest album, "One Night Stand," with a pair of release shows today.

The band -- singer John Vento, guitarists Tim Hadley and Jim McCullough, bassist Russ Oblinger, keyboardist Fred Delu, saxophonist Ed Jonnet and drummer Ron Beitle (formerly of Wild Cherry) -- will perform at noon in Market Square and at 7 p.m. at the Rivers Casino Amphitheater. Both shows are free.

The album of originals ranges from funk workouts ("Take That Train") to heartfelt ballads ("I Love You").

Singer Vento said in a statement that the band is just like the bar: "We come from that culture of the honest, hard-working, blue-collar people who frequent this little neighborhood tavern. ... Our music reflects that attitude, which is why, by design, it has soul, passion and grit."
