Still spinning -- Pittsburgh's independent record stores

One of the few record store casualties in the past year was the famed Record Rama in Ross, which is now a collection of more than one million vinyl records sitting in a shopping plaza warehouse.

Owner Paul Mawhinney said yesterday that he is beginning to sell off duplicate LPs to help cover his overhead, and that if the entire archive is not sold by the end of June, he regrets that he will begin selling it off in pieces.

Here is a sampling of Pittsburgh's surviving independent record stores (note that The Exchange stores are part of a Cleveland-based chain).

Attic Records, 513 Grant Ave., Millvale, 412-821-8484. LPs, CDs, 45s and more, with a deep collection of oldies.

Back Street Records, Regency Mall, 1570 Oakland Ave., Indiana, 724-465-5050. All varieties of vinyl, CDs, DVDs and T-shirts.

Dave's Music Mine, 1210 E. Carson St., South Side, 412-488-8800. Music and movies, with late hours on the weekend.

Desolation Row, 410 S. Craig St., Oakland. 412-681-9111. Collection inside Caliban Book Shop specializing in indie rock, '60s pop, punk, Americana.

Dorsey's Record Shop, 7614 Frankstown Ave., Homewood. 412-731-6607. CD-only sales of gospel, hip-hop, jazz and R&B, but they will transfer your vinyl and cassettes onto CD. In business since 1946.

Eide's Entertainment, 1121 Penn Ave., Downtown, 412-261-0900. Wide selection of CDs, LPs, 45s, comics, DVDs and toys.

Jerry's Records, 2136 Murray Ave, second floor, Squirrel Hill, 412-421-4533. Named last year by Paste magazine as one of The 17 Coolest Record Stores in America. Millions of records in stock and not a single CD.

Out of the Ordinary Music, 733 Monongahela Ave., Glassport, 412-672-2323. One-stop shop for punk, metal, surf and horror music and movies.

Paul's CDs, 4526 Liberty Ave., Bloomfield. 412-621-3256, CDs, vinyl and DVDs, with deep stock of indie-rock.

720 Records, 2136 Murray Ave., second floor, Squirrel Hill, 412-421-6485. LPs, CDs, DVDs and more with an emphasis on hip-hop, reggae, soul, jazz and funk.

Stedeford's, 417 E. Ohio St., North Side, 412-321-8333. One of the longest-running spots for vinyl and CDs, dating back to 1964.

Upbeat Records, 1009 Wood St., Wilkinsburg. 412-731-3710. In business for 14 years, specializing in rap, R&B, oldies and gospel.

Wicked Discs, 406 S. Craig St., Oakland, 412-682-5007. CDs and vinyl ranging from classic rock to punk to black metal.
