Maxi Saver 12, a bargain movie theater where all tickets are $1, will close at the end of business today.

An employee confirmed the news but said she was not permitted to comment further.

The theater at 2001 Mountain View Drive in West Mifflin is operated by Carmike Cinemas based in Georgia and has been open since roughly 1991. It is popular with families and thrifty moviegoers who want to see "Hotel Transylvania" or "Frankenweenie" on the big screen and stay within their budget.

"We appreciate everybody's patronage," the staffer said, declining to answer questions about the future of the employees or the building.

The dollar theater is showing -- until tonight -- a mix of movies still on some local screens, in second run or on DVD: "Flight," "Frankenweenie," "Here Comes the Boom," "Hitchcock," "Hotel Transylvania," "Ice Age: Continental Drift," "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," "Pitch Perfect," "Red Dawn," "Skyfall" and "Taken 2."

Those who click on Monday's date on Carmike's site for the theater will find this message: "This theatre's schedule is not yet available for this date. Please check back later."

Carmike operates 18 other theaters, including ones at South Hills Village and the Galleria in Mt. Lebanon, in Pennsylvania.

This imminent closing comes on the heels of news, published in Friday's Post-Gazette, that the Washington Mall Cinemas also have closed with no advance notice to patrons.
