The third annual 2013 Take a Shot at Changing the World Contest kicks off at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Heinz History Center on Smallman Street in the Strip District.

This is a digital media contest spearheaded by Steeltown Entertainment for middle and high school students. Students can win a combination of more than $10,000 in prizes for making movies about how Pittsburgh has changed the world or that feature their own ideas to make a difference.

An additional prize category has been added this year through a new partnership with Voices of a People's History, which builds on the legacy of Howard Zinn to highlight lesser-known people who contributed to the making of America.

Mr. Zinn, who died in 2010, was a historian, playwright and activist who wrote "A People's History of the United States," from the point of view of those whose contributions were largely omitted from most accounts.

Prizes also will be awarded for movies made about Pittsburgh innovations, polio and those that focus on the environment and nonviolence. Submission deadline is May 1.

Saturday's kickoff event is free and open to the public. RSVP to Rachel@steeltown.org.
