The new Amphitheatre at Sandcastle, expected to host a full concert season this summer, will not open as planned. Sandcastle Waterpark and promoter Live Nation have postponed the venue's opening until spring 2008.
In a joint statement, representatives of Live Nation and Kennywood Entertainment, which operates Sandcastle, said construction scheduling and delays in obtaining permits would prevent the opening of the 5,000-seat open-air facility east of the waterpark in West Homestead.
Having closed Chevrolet Amphitheatre at Station Square with plans to move the operation to Sandcastle, Live Nation was unsure yesterday if it would be able to place concerts intended for Sandcastle at another venue.
"It would be premature to speculate either way at this time," said Live Nation's Renee Sroka. "We really don't know yet."
With construction on the amphitheater beginning this fall, Live Nation is considering holding some of its late-season festivals there, including the annual Pittsburgh Irish Festival.
The venue's opening concert by The Fray, scheduled for June 17, has been canceled. Tickets are refundable at point of purchase. The band invites Pittsburgh fans to see its show for free by presenting the refunded tickets at the June 18 concert at Cleveland's Time Warner Cable Amphitheater or the June 29 show at Germain Amphitheater in Columbus.
